Derailleur.
I have conclusively diagnosed the problem with my mountain bike. I can be absolutely certain when I say that it is a problem with the rear derailleur. This diagnosis was aided by the fact that the whole assembly broke off today. Mid-ride.

Did the bike vault you off of it over the handle bars and then flip over on top of you? Because that happened to Don on Friday.
No, that happened a year or two ago. Crested a hill, crammed on the brakes too hard. And over I went. This one just cause me to stop in the middle of a climb, as the bike decided it no longer wanted to go forwards.
Oh. well that doesn't sound as horrific as it could be.
